While I’ve improved at picking horses, I’m still not good enough at handicapping to quit my day job. But as that gig involves writing about food and drink, apparently I am qualified to pick cocktails. On April 15 at Varanese, I’ll be a judge in MyDerbyLove.com‘s Tale of the Horse Cocktail contest.
“The contest was created to find the most delicious ‘post-Derby’ cocktail designed to act as ‘hair of the dog’ and bring its consumer back to life after surviving weeks of Derby parties, wins and losses,” according to the press release.
While Derby is my favorite social and sporting event of the year, after four years as a Louisville resident, I’ve learned not to plan anything too strenuous for the week afterward. So hopefully one of these cocktails will increase my productivity. Or something.

The 2nd Annual “Tale of the Horse” cocktail contest, sponsored by MyDerbyLove.com, will be held at Varanese, 2106 Frankfort Avenue, on Monday, April 15th at 5:30pm. The contest was created to find the most delicious “post-Derby” cocktail designed to act as “hair of the dog” and bring its consumer back to life after surviving weeks of Derby parties, wins and losses. Local bartenders will create their own unique cocktail at the event, and a panel of judges including LEO Weekly’s Bar Belle Sara Havens, freelance foodie writer Steve Coomes, MegabitesLouisville.com’s Megan Malone, and EaterLouisville.com‘s Zach Everson will choose the WIN, PLACE and SHOW drinks. The 1st place winner will receive $500 cash, the 2nd place winner will receive $200 cash, and the 3rd place winner will receive a $50 gift card to Varanese. The event is free and open to the public and will include appetizers, drink specials and dinner specials.
Bourbons Bistro’s Tina Hardison was the winner of last year’s inaugural Tale of the Horse contest with her entry “Bananas and Joe,” which included just the right measure of Absolut Vanilia Vodka, Godiva chocolate liqueur, espresso and banana whipped cream.
