Area-level Toastmasters’ humorous speech contest time, date, and location announced

As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m competing in the area level of the Toastmasters’ humorous speech contest.

The contest will occur from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. September 14 at 1850 I St. NW, Room 1-200, Washington, DC. Feel free to attend. (I need to begin rehearsing my speech; I haven’t given it any thought since the club-level contest a month ago and I never wrote down any of it.)

In addition to the humorous speeches, there also will be a Table Topics contest, where each competitor has to give an impromptu one- to two-minute talk about a subject just given to him or her.

I try to give a prepared speech at every Toastmasters meeting, so I don’t have much experience with the Table Topics, but being able to speak about a topic you’ve just been given is an impressive skill. After I earn my Competent Communicator certification, I probably will focus on Table Topics.

Hi Zach, I appreciate the comment you left on my blog at http://yvonneperry.blogspot.com/ and wanted to drop by and visit your blog in return. I see that you are a writer in D.C. and it looks like we do pretty much the same work. Writing and speaking, blogging and possibly you have a newsletter as well? I see a subscribe link, but not really sure whether I was subscribing to the RSS feed or what.

Anyway, check out http://www.writersinthesky.com and sign up for our newsletter if you are so inclined. I’m always looking for articles, blurbs, advertorials, announcements, etc. for the e-zine. The submission guidelines are on the newsletter page.

Great looking blog you have here. Nice interacting with you.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I noticed something about your club that is different than all the clubs in District 63. We have our humorous speech and evaluator’s contest in the fall and the table topics contest with the International Speech Contest in the spring. I’m planning to compete in the evaluator’s contest for my club. I made it all the way to District a few years ago and made 4th place in the Eval. contest.

What is your club’s URL? I’m in two clubs but one is newly chartered and doesn’t have a web site yet. the other one is http://fcflyers.freetoasthost.org/index.html and our District site is http://www.d63toastmasters.com.

I have 5 speeches and one Successful Leadership presentation to make before completing all the requirements for DTM. What track are you on?

Hi Zach. Nice blog you have here. Good luck in your Area Contest for the Humorous Speech. Our mid-year contests are called Quartethlons and are made of 4 categories, hence the name: Impromptu Speaking (Table Topics), Evaluation Speech, Singing (yes, singing) and Prepared Speech. Contestants are entered in all events which makes it so gruelling. I’m not sure if we’re the only District (75) that incorporates singing since all my friends seem surprised that we have it as an event. It’s a lot of fun though.
