‘So, who do you write for these days?’

I’ve been asked that question a few times recently (and not just by my parents, who I think might be happy if I enrolled in the Bloomingdale’s executive training program).

For blogs, I have regular gigs writing about travel for UpTake and Examiner.com and I contribute to BlackBook, usually about travel and culture. And, there’s that Louisville.com editor-in-chief thing. I also manage the web presence of the Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (I reckoned I should put my blogging and social media power to a good use, beyond giving advice on where to go and what to drink). And, for fun, there’s my new Tumblr blog. I’ll get all meta too and mention this site, which is now eight years old.

[Update March 8, 2010: I'm contributing to Gridskipper again too.]

In print, I contribute to Air Canada’s in-flight magazine, enRoute.

My latest article for Air Canada’s enRoute: The world’s wildest ski jumps

Air Canada's in-flight magazine, enRouteJust in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, my article on futuristic ski jumps with a sidebar on alpine dining in British Columbia appeared in the February issue of Air Canada’s in-flight magazine, enRoute. (The art that accompanies my article is stunning.)

Download a .pdf of my articles here.

You also can read the articles on enRoute’s website:

These ski jumps that are architectural marvels seem to be part of a larger movement of combining function and beauty. It’s too bad this trend didn’t get to Whistler in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics–its ski jumps appear lacking compared to the new ones being built in Europe.

And researching the alpine dining piece just solidified my longstanding desire to spend more time in British Columbia.

My first magazine appearance, from 1994, makes the Internet: A letter to the editor in Sports Illustrated

The Sports Illustrated cover from Nov. 7, 1994I just discovered my first magazine appearance has made it to the Internet–a letter to the editor in Sports Illustrated’s Nov. 7, 1994 issue in response to an article it’d published about UNC women’s soccer team’s winning streak:

During the past 23 years the Reading (Mass.) Memorial High boys’ track team has been undefeated in dual meets, putting together a 206-0-1 record.
ZACH EVERSON, Winston-Salem, N.C.

What a beautiful sentence! Even cooler, the letter led to Sports Illustrated publishing an article on my old high school track team and its coach (and the best teacher I ever had), Hal Croft.

Louisville coworking update (the last one?)

coworkingBetween my new gig as editor-in-chief of Louisville.com (which comes with a desk in a wonderful creative environment when I want it) and my new daughter (who’s a great incentive not to want to work out of the house some days), I’m no longer actively searching for coworking space in Louisville.

If you’re interested in getting coworking off the ground though–and I remain convinced that it’s both worthwhile and needed–please let me know and I’ll be happy to share what I’ve learned with you.

And it appears Hatch Creative is pursuing coworking space in downtown Louisville.

Congrats to Vivian Deuschl for earning the HSMAI’s public relations excellence award

Vivian_lobsterCongrats to Vivian Deuschl of The Ritz-Carlton for being awarded the Winthrop W. Grice Award for lifetime achievement public relations excellence at the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International’s (HSMAI) Adrian Awards earlier this month!

I met Vivian last October when she led the bloggers-only trip to China I took and had a blast bantering with her over the five days.

While Vivian’s not the reason my new daughter shares that name (my wife and I picked it out before I left for China), she didn’t do anything to sully the name either. (I’ve heard, however, that the same can’t be said for me and the name Zach.)
