Taken on Jan. 22, 2005 in Dublin at Ashfield House hostel, I was three nights into a three-month backpacking trip through Europe. While I’d traveled extensively in the United States previously, this trip was just my second time outside of North America.
I’d booked only the first three cities (Dublin, Belfast, and Madrid) ahead of time; for everything else I relied on Lonely Planet’s Europe on a Shoestring and spotty Internet access. My plan, in as much as their was one, was to take in cultural attractions during the day and do whatever the opposite of drying out is at night. And I did that quite well.
Unexpectedly, the trip led to a new passion (travel) and career (whatever it is that I’ve been doing the past decade).
