Attention Lance Armstrong apologists: Insight needed

Buzz Bissinger still believes in Lance Armstrong. But I don't.

Buzz Bissinger still believes in Lance Armstrong. I don’t.

Can anyone explain why so many people are defending Lance Armstrong but had no qualms condemning Barry Bonds other than

  • Armstrong beat cancer
  • you all bought his yellow Livestrong bracelets
  • Bonds is a cantankerous African-American (that’s right, consider the race card played)

The rules are the rules are the rules. Dope and you’re out. Are those rules fair? That’s another argument altogether. Does never having tested positive for a banned substance mean Armstrong’s never used one? No—masking has always been ahead of testing. Was every other cyclist doping too? That’s irrelevant. I don’t care if so many Tour de France cyclists get DQ’d that the final yellow jersey is belatedly given to a 3-year-old whose tricycle strayed onto the route in Arc-et-Senans.

Armstrong is a cheater.

Coming from a non-Armstrong defender, that’s easy. He built up a tremendous amount of goodwill and cool factor by beating cancer, winning several Tours, and launching his foundation. Most people commenting, including the clueless Bissinger, don’t know anything about the sport, doping, or Armstrong’s situation.

Read this, maybe it’ll make you feel better:

I am with you Zach. Disappointing, but without the dope he wouldn’t be getting titles. BTW, were you in France with a 3-year old?

Not yet, Pat—my oldest is just 2.5. We’re shooting for next year’s Tour.
