Where travel bloggers hang out in New York City

Where travel bloggers are hanging out in New York City during the 2010 Travel Blog Exchange Conference (TBEX '10).Originally this post was for Gridskipper, but my editor there is relocating to Paris for a month today (in a related story, I hate him), so I figured I’d post it here.

Want to see where the sages of online travel advice hang out in New York City? This weekend 300 travel bloggers are convening for the 2010 Travel Blog Exchange conference (with bloggers holding meetings, clearly the revolution is over and the squares have survived). But give new media credit: TBEX ’10’s official schedule and meetups show nary an Olive Garden, Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock Cafe.

Ace Hotel
20 W. 29th St.
New York, NY 10001
Hosted: PREBEX meetup. The cozy lobby bar at this 12-story Garment District boutique hotel attracts all types, including eager travel bloggers who arrived early to the conference. Heck, it’s not like most of us have anything else to do.

Blue Owl Cocktail Room
196 2nd St.
New York, NY 10003
Hosting: UpTake bloggers and members of Travel Insights 100, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. Drinks and tapas and drinks in a laid back basement lounge are on tap for contributors to UpTake. (Disclosure: I’m one of them.)

Omni Berkshire Place
21 E 52nd St.
New York, NY 10022
Hosting: TBEX ’10 Kickoff Party – Cocktails Around the World hosted by Weber Shandwick Travel & Lifestyle, open to all TBEX ’10 attendees, RSVP required, June 25 at 8 p.m. With luck I’ll be washing down blue Hawaiians with shots of absinthe and baijiu at the bar in this Midtown East hotel. In a related story, New Yorkers, please be kind to the person too lifelike to be a statue but too well dressed to be homeless on the steps of the nearby Museum of Modern Art Saturday morning. (The speakeasy password is zozzled.)

Cantor Film Center
36 E. 8th St.
New York, NY 10003
Hosting: TBEX ’10, June 26 at 9 a.m. and June 27 at 8:30 a.m. The sold out (with more than 190 people on the waiting list) TBEX ’10 is taking place at this NYU art theater. Normally it’s distinguished by its Art Moderne architecture. But this weekend you’ll recognize it by the hungover bloggers carting around laptops and bags of free stuff while trying to figure out where to watch the U.S.-Ghana soccer game on Saturday. Hint: Nevada Smith’s (and I’ve just set a record for shameless self-linking in an article shamelessly written to attract my peers).

Bar 13
35 E. 13th St.
New York, NY 10003
Hosting: Trip Advisor Happy Hour, open to all TBEX ’10 attendees, June 26, 4 p.m. Maybe all of those stereotypes about bloggers (pajama-wearing latte-sipping shut-ins–my current state) don’t apply. This roomy Greenwich Village nightclub and lounge with a roofdeck plays hip-hop (also known as rap) and attracts, well the type of people who listen to hip-hop.

The Professor’s Loft
219 2nd Ave.
New York, NY 10003
Hosting: The BootsnAll & Europcheapo Afterparty, RSVP required, June 26 at 7 p.m. Tickets are sold out to the party at this renovated 19th century apartment, but losers without them (Hey, that hurts. No wonder no one came to my birthday party.) can hang out in the Loft’s downstairs overflow room.

Just saw this. Uh, a bit late? Anyhow, saw your link to Uptake. Funny, I swear I got a solicitation from someone over there about writing for them but can’t find it anywhere in my inbox. S**t! Who heads up the bloggers over there? Maybe I can still get in touch.

Also, your profile of Bar 13 cracked me up.
