No longer confined to writing and editing, I find work as a telephone operator
When you’re a freelancer, it’s impossible for work to fall outside of your job description.
Recently a long-time client of mine inquired as to my availability. But rather than have me edit his presentations and business correspondence as I usually do, he asked me to record the outgoing message for a voice-response unit (you know, the automated message that makes you cringe when you’re calling customer service).
I’m no Mel Blanc, but my client has a bit of an accent and wanted someone who sounded more like a typical American.
So if you’re calling a certain government agency (I won’t reveal which one should it be deluged with abandoned calls), you’ll hear my voice prompting you through a series of menus.
